Calculating Distance

This section of verbal reasoning revolves around the various directions. It consist of questions involving all sort of direction puzzle. Candidate is required to make a successive follow-up of directions and ascertain the final direction or the distance between two points. The test is meant to judge the candidate,s ability to trace and follow correctly and sense the directions correctly.

Directions: There are four basic directions North N, South S, East E, West W and four cardinal directions North East NE, North West NW, South East SE, South West SW to help the candidates know the directions. The figure shows all the directions

These type of questions are solved taking  The right and left movement of a person is always with reference to the body moving in the scenario. It is not with respect to the person who is solving the questions.

Illustration 1 : What is the distance between F and G?

(a) 1 km               (b)  2 km         (c) 3 km                   (d)  4 km

Answer : B

Solution : "In the above figure, it is easily visible that the distance between F and G is 2 km.

Illustration 2 : What is the distance between A and H?

(a) 1 km              (b)  2 km         (c) 3 km                   (d)  4 km

Answer : B

Solution : "In the above figure, it is easily visible that the distance between A and H is 2 km.

Illustration  3 : What is the distance between G  and D ?

(a) 1 km              (b)  2 km         (c) 3 km                   (d)  4 km

Answer : C

Solution : "In the above figure, it is easily visible that the distance between  G  and  D is  3 km.

Illustration 4 : What is the distance between B and I ?

(a) 1 km              (b)  2 km         (c) 3 km                   (d)  4 km

Answer : A

Solution : "In the above figure, it is easily visible that the distance between  B  and I  is  1 km.

Illustration 5  : What is the minimum distance between A and C ?

(a) 1 km              (b)  sqrt{1} km         (c) sqrt{5} km                   (d)  sqrt{2} km

Answer : B

Solution : "In the above figure, it is easily visible that the distance between  A and  C is   sqrt{5} km.

According to the phythagorors theorem,

AB = 1km

BC = 2 km

AC = ?

AC^{2} = AB^{2} + BC^{2}

AC^{2} = 1^{2} + 2^{2}

AC^{2} = 1 + 4

AC^{2} = 5

AC = {sqrt{5}}

Hence the correct option is C.
